What is the goal of a drop test?

The aim of a drop test is to check the mechanical resistance of an object, in particular its ability to withstand impacts and falls. The tests are used to identify potential damage that could be caused by a drop and to ensure that the contained product reaches its destination undamaged. Drop tests can be performed for individual packages (drop test) as well as for entire pallets (rotational flat, edge and corner drop).

It is also crucial to consider the specific requirements and standards of the respective industry or target market when carrying out drop tests. Aspects such as the weight of the product, type of packaging and transportation conditions play a decisive role here.

What happens during a drop test?

In a drop test, the shipping unit is typically dropped from various heights and in different orientations onto a hard surface to see if it remains intact and free from damage. The goal is to document the stability and durability of the shipping unit, ensuring it meets required standards and can withstand the demands of a real-world shipping scenario.

Various scenarios that can occur during transport are simulated. These include not only vertical drop scenarios but also side and corner impacts, to ensure that the packaging is capable of withstanding the different stresses that can occur during loading and unloading.

In which areas are drop tests used?

In transport simulation, drop tests are carried out as an essential component in various industries and sectors to check the resilience of products during the transport process. In addition to the automotive, aviation, construction, and especially the packaging industries, drop tests are also used in other sectors. These include, for example, the electronics industry, medical technology, the food industry, and generally fragile goods.

By conducting drop tests, companies ensure that their products meet the required standards for impact resistance and stability, thereby minimizing damage during transit and guaranteeing high product quality.
